5/24/09 Hot AC Chart: Shinedown reach top 5, Daughtry goes top 20

The Fray hold at the top of the chart for an 11th non-consecutive week this week with “You Found Me”. The song just barely beat out the All-American Rejects for the top spot.

In their 3rd week in the top 10, Shinedown move into the top 5 at #5 with “Second Chance”.  This displaces “Not Meant to Be” down to #7, but the Theory of a Deadman hit still is gaining spins.  Rob Thomas’ “Her Diamonds” moves up 2 to #8. Otherwise there is little movement in the top 10, and no songs enter/exit the top 10 this week.

David Cook inches up 1 to #15 with “Come Back to Me”.  Meanwhile, fellow American Idol Alumni Daughtry move up 6 to enter the top 20 at #20 with “No Surprise”.  “No Surprise” is only in its 2nd week on the chart. Kelly Clarkson’s “I Do Not Hook Up” moves up 1 to #19, making 3 American Idol alumni in the span of numbers #15-20.

The biggest mover of the week is Katy Perry’s latest, “Waking Up in Vegas”. The song jumps 10 to #29. Also making a decent move up the chart is the Fray’s “Never Say Never”, which climbs 7 to #23.

The week’s only debut is by Coldplay. They enter at #34 with “Life in Technicolor II”, their 12 hit on the Hot AC chart.

5/17/09 Hot AC Chart: Rob Thomas goes top 10, Daughtry’s big debut

The Fray hold at the top of the chart for a tenth non-consecutive week. They may not stay their long though as the All-American Rejects inch up to #2 with “Gives You Hell”. The song is the Reject’s biggest hit yet on the Hot AC chart.

A few other songs look to give serious competition for the #1 spot in the coming weeks. “Not Meant to Be” moves up to #5,  “If Today Was Your Last Day” moves to #6, and “Second Chance” moves to #7.

Rob Thomas reaches the top 10 at #10 with “Her Diamonds”. The song is in its fourth week on the chart. “Her Diamonds” is Rob’s 7th consecutive top 10 outside of Matchbox Twenty. This too could be a contender for the top spot in a few weeks.

Pink and Kelly Clarkson both reach the top 20 with their latest hits this week. Eight songs in the top 20 are by solo women this week, and 4 of them are by Pink and Kelly. Lady GaGa also has 2 hits in the top 20.

Daughtry blast onto the chart all the way up at #26 with “No Surprise”. It’s Daughtry’s highest debut ever on the chart, and it’s the highest debut since the Fray entered at #22 last year with “You Found Me”. “Surprise” is Daughtry’s 6th hit.

Also debuting this week is the Fray’s latest “Never Say Never” and Katy Perry’s “Waking Up in Vegas”.

The biggest mover of the week is Kings on Leon’s “Use Somebody”, which jumps 5  to #34.

5/10/09 Hot AC Chart: A Wham! song returns to the charts, Britney debuts, Kelly’s move up

Little changes at the top of the chart this week, with the top 5 songs remaining the same as last week. “You Found Me” is spending its 9th non-consecutive week at the top. Future contenders at #1 include the #6 song “Not Meant to Be”, the #8 song “If Today Was Your Last Day”, and the #10 song, “Second Chance”.

Last week’s biggest mover Rob Thomas moves up 4 notches to #12 this week, but the song still has the biggest spin increase on the chart. This week’s biggest mover is no stranger to big moves, Kelly Clarkson. “I Do Not Hook Up” jumps 6 spots to #24.  Making a big move in the opposite direction is “Thinking of You” by Katy Perry. The song slips 9 to #28, and it loses the same amount of spins that Rob Thomas gained, over 400.

Britney Spears debuts with her 8th hit on Hot AC, “If You Seek Amy”. The song is being played on less than 15 stations that report to the published Hot AC chart. Also debuting this week is Seether’s remake of the Wham! classic “Careless Whisper”. Wham!’s version charted nearly 25 years ago. Rounding out this week’s debuts are the Black Eyed Peas, who return after 3 years with “Boom Boom Pow” and Kings of Leon with “Use Somebody”.

5/3/09 Hot AC Chart: Rob Thomas’ big leap, Nickelback earn another top 10

The Fray hold at the top of the chart for an 8th non-consecutive week with “You Found Me”. Numbers 2-4 hold their places this week, but the Plain White T’s enter the top 5 at #5 this week with “1, 2, 3, 4″. The song reaches this new peak in its 27th week on the chart.

Entering the top 10 this week is Nickelback’s “If Today Was Your Last Day”, at #10. The song is Nickelback’s 9th top 10 out of 11 top 40 hits. Nickelback are also still in the top 10 with their former #1 “Gotta Be Somebody”.

The big story this week is Rob Thomas’ big move up the chart. “Her Diamonds” soars 14 notches to #16 in its second week on the chart. A spin increase of over 900 fuels this move. The last song to move up at least 14 notches was, interestingly, Rob’s group Matchbox Twenty. In 2007 the group also jumped 14 spots with “How Far We’ve Come”.

Other acts also make big moves this week: The Dave Matthews Band climbs 8 to #31 with “Funny the Way It Is”, Pink climbs 6 with “Please Don’t Leave Me”, and Kelly Clarkson moves up 5 with “I Do Not Hook Up”. Going the opposite direction with a big move is “So Close, So Far” by Hoobastank, which plummets 11 to #37.

Another story this week is the number of songs with backward bullets, i.e. songs that move down yet still see an increase in spins.  Seven songs have backwards bullets this week, including “Lucky” (10-11), “Man Who Can’t be Moved” (21-23), and “Stay” (29-32).

Debuting on the chart this week is Matt Nathanson and Beyonce.

4/26/09 Hot AC Chart: Hot AC veterans return to the chart

We return to our weekly overview of the charts. These were interrupted by the review of Hot AC history. Be sure to check those posts out!

The Fray return to the top of the chart for a total of 7 non-consecutive weeks at #1. Pink slips back to #2.  Returning to #1 is not too uncommon on the chart. Just last year 3 Doors Down and Coldplay traded places a couple of times.

The only movement in the top 10 this week is the change in numbers one and two. However, below the top 10 there are bigger changes since a new recurrent rule went into effect. Songs removed to recurrent this week include “Hot N Cold”, “Rock and Roll”, and “Shattered (Turn the Car Around)”.  These songs allowed others to jump into the top 20. “Second Chance” by Shinedown jumps 5 to #16. Also entering the top 20 are “The Climb” and “Poker Face”. Lady GaGa now has 2 songs in the top 20, not a bad performance on Hot AC for a pop/dance artist.

The biggest movers this week both move up 7: David Cook’s “Come Back to Me” (29-22) and “She Is Love” by Parachute (35-28).

This week’s list of debuts all come from veterans of the Hot AC chart. Rob Thomas blasts onto the chart at #30 with “Her Diamonds”, his 7th hit outside of Matchbox Twenty. Pink enters with “Please Don’t Leave Me”, her 12th hit. Just behind Pink in terms of charted hits is Kelly Clarkson, who debuts with her 11th hit, “I Do Not Hook Up”. Finally, the Dave Matthews Band return to the chart after being away for over 3 years. They enter with “Funny the Way It Is”, their 15th hit.
