3/22/09 Hot AC Chart: Ladies race for #1

The Fray hold at #1 for a 5th week with “You Found Me”. However, a couple of ladies are looking to knock them off the top spot. Pink rises 2 to #2 with “Sober”. The song has a good bullet and may take over #1 in a few weeks. Right behind Pink is Kelly Clarkson at #3 with “My Life Would Suck without You”. That song has a smaller bullet and less of a chance at #1, but anything can still happen. “My Life” is Kelly’s 6th top 3 song on the Hot AC Chart.  Taylor Swift slips back to #4.

In their 21st week on the chart, the Plain White T’s move into the top 10 at #10 with “1,2,3,4″. It’s their 2nd top 10. [Personally, I think this song sounds very similar to their previous top 10 "Hey There Delilah", but that's just my opinion :) ]   Another song really taking off late is Theory of a Deadman’s “Not Meant to Be”. In its 19th week on the chart the song moves up to #16 with a healthy bullet.

Natasha Bedingfield jumps 5 to #18 with “Soulmate”. It’s her 3rd top 20 hit. For some useless trivia look no further: Natasha’s previous top 20 was “Unwritten”. This week another “un” song makes the top 20, the Veronica’s “Untouched”.

For those of you watching Britney’s progress on this chart, “Circus” slips back to #25. It looks like she won’t get any higher than #24, tying her biggest hit “Oops I Did It Again”.

Making the top 30 this week are: Carolina Liar, Erin McCarley, and the Script.  Debuting in the top 40 are: Miley Cyrus, Lady GaGa, U2, and Brett Dennen. Lady GaGa’s debut, “Poker Face”, is only being played on18 stations of the Hot AC panel.

3/15/09 Hot AC Chart: Females dominate top 5

While the Fray hold at the top of the chart for a fourth week, three solo females are looking to replace them at #1. Taylor Swift inches up to #2 with “Love Story”, but she loses spins this week. Meanwhile, Pink moves up to #4 with “Sober” with one of the largest increases in spins on the chart. She pushes Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck without You” down to #5, but “My Life” still has a healthy bullet. All 3 ladies still have several hundred spins to gain before overtaking the Fray, so the Fray will remain at #1 for a while longer.

No songs enter or exit the top 10 this week. Jason Mraz is nearing the one year mark on the chart and is still in the top 10 at #8. Looking top 10 bound is another song that took a while to move up the chart: “1,2,3,4″ by Plain White T’s. The song moves up to #11 in its 20th week on the chart. Lady Gaga climbs a notch to #13, while Katy Perry moves up 3 to #17.  Entering the top 20 are Theory of a Deadman and Eric Hutchinson.

Natasha Bedingfiled climbs to #23 with “Soulmate”. Britney Spears ties her biggest peak on Hot AC as “Circus” inches up to #24. The song has lost its bullet and may not move any higher.

Making the biggest moves up the chart are “I Will Be” by Leona Lewis and “Show Me What I’m Looking for” by Carolina Liar, who each climb 5 spots.

Debuting on the chart are songs by The Script, The Offspring, Saving Abel, and James Morrison. This is the first appearance by the Offspring on the Hot AC chart.

3/8/09 Hot AC Chart: Kelly Clarkson reaches the top 5

The Fray hold at the top of the chart for a third week with “You Found Me”. Taylor Swift holds at #3 with “Love Story” and is still several hundred spins from the top. Moving into the top 5 just below Taylor is Kelly Clarkson with “My Life Would Suck without You”. This is Kelly’s 6th top 5 hit on the Hot AC chart. Both Kelly’s and Taylor’s bullets have diminished, so it will be several weeks before anyone dethrones the Fray at #1.

Jason Mraz reaches 50 weeks on the chart with “I’m Yours”, and the song remains in the top 10 at #8 this week. Beyonce holds at #17 this week, seemingly a victim to the “#15 barrier” that keeps more rhythmic leaning pop songs from getting very high on Hot AC (hopefully more on this subject will come in a later post).

In their 18th week on the chart, a couple of songs reach new peaks: “Rock & Roll” by Eric Hutchinson at #22 and “Angels on the Moon” by Thriving Ivory at #23.

Britney Spears moves up to #25, making “Circus” her 2nd biggest hit on HAC. Only “Oops I Did It Again” charted higher, and that was back in 2000.

U2 slip back to #32. Only 1 of their top 40 HAC hits have failed to make the top 30, “Original of the Species”.

Debuting this week: Carolina Liar, Nick Lachey, and Gavin Rossdale.

3/1/09 Hot AC Chart: Daughtry end their record tying top 10 streak

At the top of the chart this week, the Fray hold for a 2nd week with “You Found Me”.  They look to remain at #1 for a while, as the next serious competitor, “Love Story”, is sill several hundred spins back at #3. For you Idol watchers out there, David Cook rebounds to #4, while Kelly Clarkson climbs 1 to #6.

Daughtry falls out of the top 10 this week for the first time since 2007. That’s right; it’s been just over 2 years since we’ve had a top 10 on the Hot AC chart without a Daughtry song. Their total of 107 weeks ties the all time record set by Nickelback.

Daughtry make way for the All-American Rejects, who score their 3rd top 10, “Gives You Hell”. New entries in the top 20 this week are “1, 2, 3, 4″ and “Lucky”.  “1, 2, 3, 4″ is currently in its 18th week on the chart. Another song that is taking its time peaking is “Rock & Roll” by Eric Hutchinson, who reaches a new peak of #23 in its 17th week on. (Let’s not forget “Let Me Be Myself” by 3 Doors Down, currently at its peak of #12 in its 23rd week on).

The biggest move up the chart is “The Fear” by Lily Allen, which moves up 6 to #29. The biggest dropper is “Lovers in Japan”, which plummets 10 spots to #37. The only debut this week is “I Hate This Part” by the Pussycat Dolls at #39.
