8/31/08 Hot AC chart: Coldplay returns to #1, Pink’s big move, David Archuleta debuts

Coldplay return to the top of the chart this week with “Viva La Vida”. It’s the song’s 3rd nonconsecutive week at the pole position. This means that Coldplay replaced 3 Doors Down for a second time. That has only happened once before on the Hot AC chart. Back in 1997, “Sunny Came Home” by Shawn Colvin and “One Headlight” by the Wallflowers replaced each other at #1 in the same fashion.

Kid Rock climbs to #3 with “All Summer Long”, nearing his high mark of the #2 “Picture”. Elsewhere in the top 10, Maroon 5 rack up a 7th top 10 with “If I Never See Your Face Again.” The same song marks the first appearance by Rhianna in the top 10.

Pink leaps 9 notches this week to #26 with “So What” and easily becomes the week’s biggest mover.

David Archuleta debuts at #36 with “Crush”, the week’s highest debut. David Cook remains at #6, so the top 2 of American Idol season 7 is on the chart simultaneously.  This is the first time that the top 2 from any season of Idol have been on the Hot AC chart at the same time.  Other Idol trivia: This week there are 5 former Idol contestants on the chart: David Cook, Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood, and David Archuleta.

Other debuts this week include John Mayer’s remake of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’”, Duffy’s “Warwick Avenue”, and Rhianna’s “Disturbia”. In just 2 and 1/2 years, Rhianna has been on the HAC chart 9 times.

David has a fresh appeal and a talent that cannot be denied. I have been impressed with his growth as a person, and as an artist since his first Idol appearance. It’s good to see someone so young be given an opportunity to realize their dreams, and to have him be as down to earth, humble and as appreciative as his fans are of the success he’s attained. I look forward to buying his album, keeping tabs on his career, and getting to see him perform as a solo artist. WELL DONE David on a great year of surprises and successes – and here’s to many more of the same!
