9/28/08 Hot AC Chart: Daughtry sets another record

At the top of the chart this week, Coldplay hold for a 7th week with “Viva La Vida”. Jason Mraz remains at #2, in its 27th week on the chart. Could it go #1 and set a record for longest climb to #1? Stay tuned.

Moving up to #4 is Daughtry’s “What about Now”. This gives the group 5 top 5s from a single cd. This sets a record for most top 5s from a debut cd, and it ties the record for most top 5s from a single cd. The only other act to do this is fellow Idol alum Kelly Clarkson. Nickelback came close, but “Rockstar” peaked at #6.

In other news…Pink gets closer to the top 10 as “So What” jumps to #12. Seether earn a 2nd top 20 hit with “Rise above This”, and Delta Goodrem is nearly top 20 at #21. Two veteran acts debut this week. Sarah McLachlan returns after a 4 year absence with “U Want Me 2″, and 3 Doors Down score a 10th hit with “Let Me Be Myself”.

9/21 HAC Chart: Jason Mraz’s new peak, Leona & Linkin Park’s big moves

Coldplay hold at the top of the chart again this week for a total of 6 weeks.

Heading toward #1 is the latest by Jason Mraz, “I’m Yours”. The song moves up to #3 this week. It’s now Jason’s biggest hit on the HAC chart. His first hit was his biggest, as “The Remedy” peaked at #4 in 2003.

Daughtry inch up to #6 and look top 5 bound. Will they get 5 top 5s from a single cd?

Jordin Sparks reaches the top 20 this week. Also reaching the top 20, and tying for the biggest mover, is Leona Lewis with “Better in Time”. The song jumps 6 notches to #19.

The song that ties Leona Lewis for the week’s biggest move is “Leave Out All the Rest” by Linkin Park. It jumps 40-34. Linkin Park’s last hit, “Shadow of the Day” is their only top 10.

David Archuleta makes the top 30 as “Crush” moves up to #29.

Debuting this week are 2 newcomers: Lenka with “The Show” and “Someone Like You” by Safety Suit. Katy Perry is the 3rd debut song with “Hot N Cold”.

More Mediabase Changes

Those who read my columns know that I get my Hot AC chart information from Mediabase, to whom I’ve expressed my gratitude for providing data for free to us chart fantatics. Lately though they’ve been making some changes, which I have also chronicled. In brief, the daily updates and songs below #40 were taken away in July with no warning or explanation.

Today the next chapter begins as www.mediabasemusic.com has been redone. The site no longer shows full charts, e.g. Top 40 or Top 50 of the formats. The link to www.americasmusiccharts.com via mediabasemusic.com has been removed and replaced with a link within its own domain. The americasmusiccharts site is still up independently and shows last week’s charts. We’ll see if the site updates to this week. If not, then another avenue has been taken away. {Update 9/17/08: The americasmusiccharts site did update with the full chart} I hope the trend does not continue with Mediabase becoming more paranoid with their data. Even super-paranoid BDS/Billboard shows complete charts via the Radio and Records website.

On the miniscule chance that someone from Mediabase reads this, please let us know what’s going on, and if full charts will always be available to the general public, ala Radio & Records.

9/7/08 Hot AC Chart: Kid Rock inches toward #1, O.A.R. go top 10, Pink jumps again

At the top of the chart this week, Coldplay hold at #1 for a fourth week with “Viva La Vida”.  Just below at #2, Kid Rock climbs 1 into the runner-up spot with “All Summer Long”. This ties his previous peak of “Picture”.  For the song to make it to the top, it needs to pick up spins faster or Coldplay will have to start to fall. Neither looks to happen too soon.

In his 20th week on the chart, Gavin Rossdale inches up to #4. O.A.R. earn their first top 10 this week with “Shattered”, which slips into the top 10 at #10.

The biggest mover on the chart once again this week is Pink with “So What”. The song jumps 5 notches to #21, and she is the greatest gainer on the chart as well. There is a large gap in spins between #21 and #20, so while her spin increase will remain healthy, she may not make as big of a move next week.

Below #21 little movement occurs, with the biggest mover in this part of the chart belonging to David Archuleta, who moves up 3 to #33.

Debuting on the chart is the charity single, “Just Stand Up!”. The song is attributed to “Artists Stand Up to Cancer”, so the song will not count toward any of the individual artists’ tally on the chart. The song is the highest debut at #35. The only other debut is Chris Brown, who enters at #40 with “Forever”.

Over on the AC chart, American Idol earns another #1 spot as “The Time of My Life” by David Cook climbs to #1. On the Hot AC chart, he holds at #6.

8/31/08 Hot AC chart: Coldplay returns to #1, Pink’s big move, David Archuleta debuts

Coldplay return to the top of the chart this week with “Viva La Vida”. It’s the song’s 3rd nonconsecutive week at the pole position. This means that Coldplay replaced 3 Doors Down for a second time. That has only happened once before on the Hot AC chart. Back in 1997, “Sunny Came Home” by Shawn Colvin and “One Headlight” by the Wallflowers replaced each other at #1 in the same fashion.

Kid Rock climbs to #3 with “All Summer Long”, nearing his high mark of the #2 “Picture”. Elsewhere in the top 10, Maroon 5 rack up a 7th top 10 with “If I Never See Your Face Again.” The same song marks the first appearance by Rhianna in the top 10.

Pink leaps 9 notches this week to #26 with “So What” and easily becomes the week’s biggest mover.

David Archuleta debuts at #36 with “Crush”, the week’s highest debut. David Cook remains at #6, so the top 2 of American Idol season 7 is on the chart simultaneously.  This is the first time that the top 2 from any season of Idol have been on the Hot AC chart at the same time.  Other Idol trivia: This week there are 5 former Idol contestants on the chart: David Cook, Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood, and David Archuleta.

Other debuts this week include John Mayer’s remake of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’”, Duffy’s “Warwick Avenue”, and Rhianna’s “Disturbia”. In just 2 and 1/2 years, Rhianna has been on the HAC chart 9 times.
