5/25/08 Hot AC Chart: Leona reaches #1, Madonna rebounds

“Bleeding Love” climbs to #1 this week in its 8th week on the chart. That is a fast rise to #1, but it is not the record.  The record is 6 weeks, set by “I’ll Be There for You” by the Rembrandts and tied by “Thank U” by Alanis Morissette. Songs that took 7 weeks to reach #1 include “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by Elton John and “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion.  “Bleeding” is the youngest song in the top 10 this week. Also notable is that the song is the greatest gainer in the top 40 for the 8th week in a row.

Madonna rebounds to a new peak of #21. If the song continues to gain spins, and especially if “Bubbly” goes to recurrent, Madonna could reach the top 20 next week. If she does, she will be played on American Top 20, which will give the song a boost in spins as well.

Bubbling under the top 50 on the chart is American Idol winner David Cook with “Time of My Life”.  On Tuesday 5/27, the song had made it into the top 50. The song is already top 30 on AC and is moving into the top 50 of the Pop chart as well.

5/18/08 HAC chart: Leona poised for #1

On this week’s Mediabase HAC chart, Leona  Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” jumps 3 more notches to number 2, and the song is the greatest gainer once again.  She has a good shot at taking the number one spot next week, and look for her to stay there for a while.

This week’s second biggest gainer is Jordin Sparks’ “No Air”.  The song moves up 3 to #14.

Big movers for the week include Sara Bareilles and Kid Rock. Their songs rise 7 spots each to numbers 31 and 32 respectively.

“Bubbly” watch: Colbie Caillat’s former #1 holds onto the chart for a 45th week.

Madonna update: “4 Minutes” falls back 1 to #23, but the song still has a bullet.

Stars of 1989 returning in 2008?

This past year has seen a resurgence of acts who charted big in 1989. Some of them have not done too well, while others have excelled. Let’s take a look:

  • Janet Jackson hit #1 in 1989 with “Miss You Much” and top 30 on the pop chart in 2008 with “Feedback”
  • Madonna hit #1 in 1989 with “Like a Prayer” and “Cherish” and top 10 in 2008 with “4 Minutes”.
  • Taylor Dayne reached #2 in 1989 with “Don’t Rush Me” and top 30 on the AC chart in 2008 with “Beautiful”.
  • Paula Abdul had 3 #1s in 1989, including “Straight Up” and she reached the top 30 of the AC chart in 2008 with “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow”
  • New Kids on the Block hit #1 in 1989 with “I’ll Be Loving You Forever” and “Hangin’ Tough” and are in the top 40 of the pop chart in 2008 with “Summertime”
  • Bryan Adams didn’t hit #1 in 1989 but in 1991 with “Everything I Do” and is in the top 20 of the AC chart with “Thought I’d Seen Everything”.

5/11 HAC Chart: Leona in the Top 5, Gavin Jumps

Daughtry holds on to #1 for a second week this week, and Lifehouse ties the peak of their previous hit as “Whatever It Takes” inches up to #3.

Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” climbs 3 more to #5. The song also is in the top 10 of the AC chart, top 10 on the Rhythmic chart, and #1 on the pop chart. Leona still has the biggest bullet in the top 40, and she may move into the top 2 or 3 next week.

The biggest mover on the chart is “Love Remains the Same” by Gavin Rossdale. He jumps 6 to #25. This is his first appearance on HAC.

“Bubbly” reaches 44 weeks on the chart. The last song to spend at least 44 weeks on was “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. Speaking of Natasha, her latest climbs to #23. Her previous hit stalled at #21, but “Pocketful of Sunshine” looks to have more momentum and should go higher.

Diva watch: Madonna inches up 1 to #22 with “4 Minutes”. Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body” slips back to #40. “Touch” is Mariah’s 13th song to chart at HAC.

100 Hot AC #1s: Who has the most?

Daughtry’s “Feels Like Tonight” is the 100th song to reach #1 on the old Radio and Records and current Mediabase Hot AC chart. The song is also Daughtry’s 3rd #1. Who has the most number ones?

It all depends on how you count it. If you count all the songs a person has sung on, then the answer is Rob Thomas. Counting number ones by Matchbox Twenty, his hit with Santana, and his own solo career, Rob has had 6 number ones.

If you count individual acts separately, meaning Rob Thomas as a solo artist and Matchbox Twenty as a separate group, then the answer is Matchbox Twenty and Nickelback with 4 each.

Who else has at least 3 number ones on HAC? This exclusive club includes the following acts: Daughtry, Goo Goo Dolls, Elton John, Madonna, Matchbox Twenty, Nickelback, and Santana.

5/4/08 Chart: Daughtry hits #1, Leona goes top 10

“Feels Like Tonight” climbs to #1 this week, giving Daughtry their 3rd number one hit on the HAC chart. As a group, Daughtry’s batting .750 for #1 hits (3/4). Only “Over You” has failed to reach #1. However, if you count any hit Chris has charted, then he’s 3 for 5. “Wanted Dead or Alive” reached #35 as a solo hit.

Leona Lewis reaches the top 10 in just 5 weeks as “Bleeding Love” moves up to #8. If she were to keep the same size bullet for the next 2 weeks, she could reach the top of the chart. However, that seems unlikely as songs usually slow down as they approach the top. The record for reaching #1 in the shortest amount of time is 6 weeks, set by “”I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts and “Thank You” by Alanis Morissette.

Speaking of Alanis, she returns to the top 40 this week with “Underneath”. This is her 15th Hot AC hit, and her first since 2005’s “Crazy”.

Madonna moves up 5 more notches to #23. Her bullet needs to increase if she is going to make the top 20, as there is usually a large gap between #21 and #20.

Kid Rock returns to the chart for the first time since 2004 with “All Summer Long”.

(edit made 5/7/08 to correct weeks on chart for Leona Lewis from 4 to 5)
